Healthcare informatics

An academic web application connecting medical terminology, literature lookup and reporting.

Academic & internshipAcademic studyUniversity of St. Thomas · 2013

The system at a glance.

A conceptual view of the flow and its boundaries.

The challenge.

The project explored how to make chronic kidney disease terminology and research easier to understand through a web interface.

My contribution.

Contributed to ETL, query design, Java web development, testing and deployment in a team academic project.

Implementation.

  • Implemented ETL from terminology data into a staging database for cleansing.
  • Worked with the team on UMLS and PubMed queries and reporting workflows.
  • Developed web interfaces and supported application packaging, deployment and unit tests.

Design decisions.

Terminology and literature have different structures and require deliberate mapping.

A research application supports information exploration rather than clinical diagnosis.

Validation.

JUnit tests, debugging and application validation supported the academic implementation.

The outcome.

Built a team academic application for exploring medical terminology and literature.

Explore the pattern.

The companion repository is an independent educational demonstration built with synthetic examples. It illustrates related engineering patterns and does not contain employer source code or production data. Repositories are currently private; please contact me for access.
